Kentmere

Kentmere is a lovely valley surrounded by hills and is near Kendal in the Lake District. We have had very frosty evenings of late and the effects remain in shady spots throughout the day. Here are a couple of interesting frosty patterns. But when one looks across the valley to the sunny side, you are treated to a fantastic view of warm fall colours and winter greens that can only be found in England.

Ingleborough Limestone Pavement

Ingleborough is one of the highest hills in Yorkshire at almost 2400 ft and it is only 10 a minute drive from Honeysuckle Cottage. There is an interesting geological feature called a limestone pavement about 2/3 of the way to the top. This pavement provides some fantastic views in the late afternoon sun. At one spot there is a lone tree eeking out an existance in a pretty barren landscape.

Sunset at Arnside

Arnside is a lovely town at the mouth of the Kent River which flows into Morecambe Bay.
Although not the best sunset Arnside has seen, it was enjoyable. When we turned around to go home, and there was the moon just starting to rise.

Across the Yorkshire Dales to Middleham

Sunday Nov 13 was a beautiful sunny day. But alas, the sun lasted only the one day. A typical Yorkshire Dales image near Semer Water southeast of Hawes.

Semer Water reflections on a rare day of calm.

Middleham Castle with one of the largest "keeps" in a British castle.

A beautiful display of fruit from a winter berry plant "pyracantha firehorn" in Middleham.

The English are famous for putting post boxes in some very remote areas. This one is in the lovely but sparcely populated Langstrothdale which we travelled through enroute home. Well worth another visit on a sunny day.

Haweswater

Haweswater is reservoir built in the 1930's to provide water for Manchester and the northwest of England. It is 6 km long and holds 84 billion litres of water. These pictures are taken on a crisp fall day and shows Haweswater at it's best.

Brimham Rocks - Yorkshire Dales

Later in the day on 7 Nov, when the clouds were moving in we visited one of the most amazing geological features in England, the Brimham Rocks.

A sillouette - old man and a tree.

Fountains Abbey - Yorkshire Dales

Finally, a day of blue sky and brilliant sun (well at least part of a day). We visited the World Heritage Site of Fountains Abbey - one of the most extensive and beautiful Abbey's in all of England.

Strid Wood - Yorkshire Dales

Maggie and I took advantage of another rare day of partial sun to explore the Yorkshire Dales between Skipton and Ripon. Here is a lovely old hotel in fall splendor plus a couple of pictures from Strid Wood near Bolton Abbey.
